Cool, it's a promising start from the LG V40 though. What have narrowed it down to so far, R6 I guess + ? Depending on budget it might be worth seeing what ibasso brings to the tavle with DX300 i think we know pretty much everything except DAC now 🙈😂 R6, wm1a or Dethonray Honey H1 as a DAC/amp
I dont like Ibasso.
Haha fair enough buddy, wow all pretty different 🤔

i'm afraid the combination of wp900 and r6 2020 will be too bright, sharp. I don't like that. On the other hand, I don’t like too warm, dark sound. It has to be as natural as possible, with the right weight on the instruments and vocals. The problem is because I can’t try anything before buying.

Are wm1a and R6 2020 really similar in sound? Maybe you know Nayparm?

Are wm1a and R6 2020 really similar in sound? Maybe you know Nayparm? Not for me as an EQ user With Neutron and its PEQ on the R6 I can acheive my preferred signature. With the WM1A I am limited to a standard EQ.
I don't/can't compare sound between daps with no eq as they all sound horrendous to me that way 😂

I would like to know how you think it matches against the cowon players as well. And if the older less featured cowons keep up with more modern offerings at all. Not much info on cowons and not many people had them to compare. I may have a chance to grab a Plenue S and ive always liked the cowon eq/dsp. Also related, the Plenue S seems like "The One" cowon people love. Is it worth it over the newer Cowons? Is this due to their general signature and synergys, or are there other technicalities involved?

R8 is more powerful with better DACs and amp stage. Cowons are awesome. Plenue S is still TOTL.
Plenue S is TOTL with burrbrown PCM1794 DAC - nice large LME49600 buffers (like LPG) Plenue L is TOTL with ES9038Pro DAC and opa1622
They all use the same OS, Processor, Screens etc. The Plenue S has it's processor clocked higher and can handle DSD256, convert to PCM and apply EQ to them (hence heatsink chassis design). Plenue L does DSD256 but no EQ can be applied, passed native to the DAC

Thats some decently in depth plenue knowledge. I love cowon, had them since the original d2 and am upgrading from a J3 now. I just wish they stepped into this century with their offerings while not losing their sound identity. Theyve been riding the same hardware which is a bit dated now.
I have an r6 2020 and should have an S coming. Ill look forward to comparing them.

So i received and listened to the r6 2020 very briefly but i enjoyed it a lot. Its a step above the cowon j3 and leagues above the m11. Staging, space, and dynamics are good to good +, timbre is ok, the mseb and eq is mehhh. The dap can be fun but i rather have a good bar to raise or lower certain frequencies. Mseb seems to manipulate a few things at once and anything outside a slight adjustment really mutes or muffles things. The android and extras are yet to be seen as i didnt sive into it.
But the sound is fun, with a slightly thicker or warmed up V shape. Bass is there and controlled, but not extremely tight, vocals are present, highs are smooth but you can get good sparkle if you like the mseb.

I wanted to come back and say i bought an r6 2020 and Cowon Plenue S to compare side to side.
The S won easily. It pairs so well with the Focal Radiance and i havent even taken the time to set a custom eq.
The focal adds dynamics the S lagged in and the S leans into the great bass and mids of the focal and the eq brings the treble back from its recessed position.
My one gripe is i cant find a good cable. I bought a DHC fusion so i could use the balanced out. It sounds compressed and more analytical. I feel like that is the opposite of what the balanced should do.
Oh also the volume buttons really are picky and need to be pressed juuuuust right.

R6 2020 1.40G changelog:
1. Added MQA USB HID communication*; (*USB HID communication: The player communicates with its USB device using HID protocol—the player sends audio data to the USB device; and the USB device decodes and renders the received DAC in MQA audio data and presents the relative information) 2. Various other bug fixes.
