Caps can always be upgraded. Â But there is no M2 that Steve have seen yet The EU volume cap I still think that it is possible just like the M1...but you will need to have it rooted first just like any androids ?

Very late starting this thread, maybe from my lack of interest in a slow Android Sony ? Also wouldn't NW-WM2A and NW-WM2Z have made more sence đ¤đ Definite lack of interest here by switching to Android, the best thing about the Signature series was the OS. Theyâve obviously gone to Android for streaming to serve the masses but itâs now no different than anything else on the market and the masses arenât spending ÂŁ3k on a DAP either. On the other hand, there wouldâve been absolutely no point in releasing another DAP if it didnât have Android because all the other changes are too minor to warrant the R&D or to spend 3k again. I donât get these models. Theyâre aimed at a completely different crowd that already have plenty of choices at varying prices. Anyone considering a DAP is either buying their first one so unlikely to buy one this expensive or theyâve been around for years and know what they like. The only reason to opt for the Sony is build quality and battery life. The 1A/1Z series have a certain charm about them, you know theyâre a dedicated offline Walkman of the past but with modern features. They have proprietary hardware and software that no other DAP has so it was designed to be its own thing rather than compete with the market, that made it stand out. This is all before we even talk about MrWalkmanâs firmware modsâŚ. Honestly, I think Iâll just buy a mint WM1Z at some stage and get it modded. Your loss Sony.

After the mod the only difference is the 128GB extra storage and the gold plated copper case, everything else is identical

After the mod the only difference is the 128GB extra storage and the gold plated copper case, everything else is identical I'll confess I understand the 1Z's copper chassis probably doesn't add much but I love the fact it's so over engineered. I'd happily pay the premium just for that. At this stage, whatever I buy will be second hand anyway. Nowhere stocks these things anymore and I'll be surprised if parts are even available in the next couple of years if they aren't discontinued already. The more I look at the DAP landscape is the more I'm convinced these players were a lighting in a bottle moment on Sony's part. I'm literally looking at buying players just for spares to avoid this issue. These are getting to the stage they'll be impossible to find as spares in 5-10yrs time.

Reading lots of comments elsewhere I've only gleaned the 1AM2 is a step up from the 507, and it's slightly better than the original 1A. Not a lot out there to form a strong opinion.

The M2 is better than M1 from the principles and basic architectures. Modifications only meant to improve upon the existed platforms and not to be competing against a totally new architecture It is the same as everything else in the world. A modified vehicle, houseâŚ.etc. An example is that Lotus uses Toyota Camry engine, but that doesnât mean you can modify a Camry to out perform a Lotus anytime soon . Even if you did, what if the Lotus also have some upgrades ? Same question here, what if you were to upgrade the M2 ? In the end, it is the âdesiresâ and then â$$$â

Sony seem to like making Daps that barely get warm, is that a main consideration or a by-product of the class d amping they use, and battery life is the main consideration?

As I understand it that is a characteristic of class D

Battery is always Sony main concern, then reliability. Simply puts , a battery can last very very long if you donât always have heavy draws and loads to it. Therefore Sony uses class D and even with a very thin battery pack of less than 2000mAh, Walkman still Cary on more than 30 hours. The drawbacks is that it doesnât have enough power for many hard to drive phones
