This is the reason why I preferred this unit. There is a slight higher "level up" in performance, in the trebles and "speed" area, which makes complex passages more stable and resolving. This was only noticable in side by side comparison of other units, which were on the more musical side, like my Sony 1z. The Sony would need the Nayparm mod in order to "level up" to performance in this specific area. It already "leveled up" a notch with the "DMP-FE" firmwares so this is a high bar indeed that the 220MAX is at. So I plan to do the EX mod on it in coming month, hopefully to give more depths. No need to look elsewhere as all the other units are basically choices. We have seen the newer players like this M8 gain ground over the top players and it has become more a preference choice. I tested the SE200 which has same AKM chip, but only one instead of two. It was well implemented and I feel it sounds exactly how the M8 is described against the Sony... So I think players like the Sony and the MAX will be a frame of reference to compare to. If I had the M8 I don't think I would bother with the other units unless I had money, because from my experience with the SE200, its already at the reference level, and the M8 unit is using same dac chip and already categorized as musical, so I presume it's better as it using two chips. For me it came down to an opportunity in getting a good used deal with the ibasso 220Max. I wonder how the inside of the M8 looks for future modding if it would gain the popularity of modding. Nice, look forward to seeing MAX EX mod. Maybe whitigir could post pics of M8 amp board and his hard wired socket 😁👍 I don't have either of these daps any more.
So far for the M8, I still have no plan in modifying it yet. May be the way it is tuned is well complimented to the MAXEX ? Hardwired M8 is the only thing I have done The Socket is Ribbon cables toward the Ampboard which sits atop the main board similar to modular design. You can see the steel shielding is covering everywhere to tackles the shielding issues. It is down right the best shielding I have seen implemented on a DAP, simply just because it shield every essentials components for the audio purposes, such as LPF, Buffer/Amp, Bluetooth, DAC, Main SOC, Battery. The battery is sitting on top of a steel plate which is as a main shield toward the back side of the main board. The socket has Ground, and also plug detections circuits. The 4.4mm Female socket is not Pentaconn. It is a customized by an unknown maker to me, but it definitely is not Pentaconn. By hard wired the M8, I had to Bypass the plug detection circuitry and use a bare 4.4mm socket for the purest signal transmissions. If anyone would like the Terminals, let me know and I can put it up here. I also Bypass the ground connection toward the 4.4mm Pentaconn. The electrolytic capacitors are Elna Silmic II customized jacket for China demands, the rest is Panasonic POSCaps, you will see them everywhere in the M8. Why do I hardwired my M8 ? Because I don’t like the removable mechanism....it is like I am using adapter.....I also want a stronger connections with better integrity than Ribbon cables (never a fan of it)....talking of Ribbon cables, the Cayin C9 has ribbon cables right where it counts....input and output toward volume pot! For $2,000 and they couldn’t think of anything better to do....omg

I briefly measured it and it was a little strange sitting @170uf or so, but really seem 47uF off board. I could be wrong, but I was thinking maybe Shanling had it custom made These pictures show the Authentic Pentaconn and the Shanling 4.4 socket (removed from the brass housing). You can see it is shorter than the Pentaconn and also has Ribbon cables toward the receptacles , which is then connected to the Socket mechanism and then connected to another ribbon cables toward another Snap in connectors. Yes! Extra joints, extra ribbon cables. This is where a direct soldered on would be more preferable Attachments:
