Does it measure well though? Based on data from L7audio. He concluded that it is not a very worthy buy, but then is worth a try.

From Weibo
Listen to the wonderful sound HIFIMANHM901R blessed with self-developed Himalayan DAC chip
As a quasi-music enthusiast, I still have a certain pursuit of sound quality. When buying a music player, I often wander between high-definition sound quality and cost-effectiveness. As a new product, HIFIMAN HM901R is equipped with a domestically developed R2R architecture HYMALAYA DAC chip, and the performance is close PCM1704 chip, 20mW low function greatly improves battery life, and the most important thing is that the price is still very beautiful, so start to satisfy your own hobby of listening to music.
The appearance design of HIFIMAN HM901R is very interesting. The fuselage is made of aluminum alloy. The front is covered with imitation leather material except for the screen area. The design of the physical buttons gives me the illusion of controlling the screen display. In fact, it is transparent. Only the internal chips of the player can be seen through the screen.
HIFIMAN HM901R side aluminum alloy body is designed with a lock/unlock toggle switch to prevent the physical buttons from being accidentally touched during music playback. The TF card slot in the middle position is very interesting. If you want to play lossless songs in the TF card, you need to use your mobile phone. APP control.
The top of HIFIMAN HM901R provides enthusiasts with 4.4mm balanced port, 3.5mm balanced/single port, 3.5mm line LO output port, which can basically meet everyone's needs. For me, the 3.5mm port is enough. I usually use HIFIMAN DEVA listens to songs.
The back of the HIFIMAN HM901R is laser-engraved with the product information. The detachable back cover is very interesting. It makes me find a nostalgic feeling of replacing the battery of the mobile phone. When disassembling, I only need to push it down. Remove the back cover.
There are two versions of HIFIMAN HM901R for enthusiasts to choose from. One is the version with classic amp card, and the other is the version with balanced amp card. This balanced amp card is equipped with four OPA627 and BUF634 chips in your own hands. The material can be said to be very solid.

HIFIMAN HM901R's driving sound is still very charming, and the driving force is completely sufficient. Although the overall analysis is not outstanding, it is actually quite good, and the sense of space is also particularly strong. The player is also compatible with IEM cards, miniBox cards, 8397 cards and other cards, and overall playability is still quite high.
HIFIMAN HM901R has a variety of playback modes. The simplest solution is to use Bluetooth to connect to the mobile phone and use the music APP to listen to lossless music. Bluetooth supports protocols from LDAC, aptX-HD to SBC/AAC, which are basically the same as HM1000 without any reduction. .
HIFIMAN HM901R supports playback of lossless songs in the TF card. Because it highlights the decoding ability, all the hardware that affects the sound quality is discarded. The control terminal adopts the HM1000 solution, which is controlled by the mobile phone APP to improve the sound quality while also improving the player. Endurance.
To use APP control, you need to install the HIFIMAN-Remote APP on the mobile phone. After the installation is complete, bind the HIFIMAN HM901R through the APP Bluetooth link. After synchronizing the song list, you can play FLAC, APE, DSD and other lossless music through the mobile phone.
Teammates who like to use desktop computers and laptops to listen to music can directly connect the Type-C interface at the bottom of the HIFIMAN HM901R to the Type-C interface plugged into the desktop and laptop using the data cable. Use the player's USB DAC function, which can support up to To 24bit/384 kHz.
HIFIMAN HM901R uses the domestically developed R2R architecture DAC chip to reduce power consumption and increase battery life. The official nominal full battery life can reach about 9 hours. I use the Foobar2000 playback software on my laptop at home on weekends to listen to DSD lossless music. The battery life is still pretty reliable. Spectral.
Because Windows 10 is basically popular now, HIFIMAN HM901R does not need to install a driver, it can be used directly. The audio output is earphones (HIFIMAN-HM901R is sufficient), and lower versions of Windows and MAC OS need to install corresponding drivers.
As a player product, HIFIMAN HM901R has an exquisite appearance and is equipped with a self-developed R2R architecture HYMALAYA DAC chip. It is indeed very solid from a performance perspective and hardware materials. The design that can replace the amp card also makes it playable. Great increase, returning to the sound quality. In terms of sound quality, the exposition of the human voice is still quite high, the mid-to-high frequency performance is clear and transparent, and the low-frequency shock and diving are quite strong, although it has not been a long time since I have been exposed to this player. , But from the perspective of cost performance and playability, it is really impressive. saw this sold in taobao. hope they will release it internationally. Aparrently the specs are not quite right and its supposed to measure quite a bit lower. Its one of the speculated reasons why it nor been released international. Not sure what Hifi man are doing, dap, dac/amp wise these days. They seem to be going backwards.

Just a quick subjective impression. Just got an HM901R 2 days ago. (got both the HM901R and the R2R2000 at an affordable 2nd hand price in HK, so am able to try them)
Did a quick listen/comparison with the R2R2000 Red. Using Sony XBA-Z5, listening to Susan Wong, True Love Ways-flac. Tonally, very similar sound. The HM901R has more micro detail, and can hear the voice has more detail. Can hear the inflections and tremolo in the voice, that are not so obvious with the R2R2000, and vocals and music have more emotion, note richness, that gives an involving sound. There is more of a flow to the music. Only obvious in comparison. I switched the Z5 IEM between the 2 multiple times, trying to understand what the difference was that I was hearing. Caveats are that this brief comparison is purely subjective. Not scientifically volume matched, not burned in, etc, so this is just a quick impression, as I have them both at hand, and this may help to indicate that there is a positive difference, and the DAP is worth trying out.
Another thing I think will work, but have not tried yet, is to use the Line Out to an amplifier or powered speaker. The iPhone running the HifiMan app is the controller/remote, playing the songs from the MicroSD card in the HM901R. This should be a pretty good quality signal, and will use the HM901R SQ/output directly, without any additional digital processing, BT transmission, etc. And there will be no dependency on the receiving amp/speaker's BT codec, or any additional DAC, so no degradation from those components. I was previously thinking of using an Oriolus 1795 as a good qualtiy BT receiver, but realized that the HM901R will do an even better job, and will also serve as a regular DAP paired with a phone for the control I/F. So I am starting to warm to what HifiMan is doing with this device. Yes, there is no display, but this weakness can also be a strength, and support new/different functionality. And for an affordable price. Using it as a high quality front end music source is intriguing...especially if it sounds as good as I think it can, by simplifying the components feeding an amp/speaker. And much less expensive, and simpler, than many sources....
Anyways, just rambling, and thinking of how I can use this idiosyncratic device.

Not having a display and relying on a Smartphone for control pretty much kills the HM901R for my use. I'd rather stick with my R2R2K. The player may be basic in features, yet it still remains an effective standalone DAP with dual R2R DAC's and associated sound signature.
The HM901R seems more of a follow up to the HM1000 which went nowhere fast, due to quality & SW issues. Pity as Hifiman very clearly understands audio, yet struggles with the design and execution of it's players. TBH having to rely on a secondary device to control a standalone portable player to me is a significant oversight.
The upcoming Hiby RS6 is likely a far more practical solution, which I believe uses the same R2R solution...
