Recently purchased a HiBy R4 and was able to root and tweak it in part based on the instructions here for other HiBy models, so I figured I'd share what I did.
I rooted it using Magisk like normal. Although HiBy is now also posting the OTA update files on their site, I was able to use the the generic SM6125 firehose loader from here to read the boot partition. To enter EDL mode you can use `adb reboot edl` or hold all 4 buttons on the right side when booting while plugged into USB. The boot partition is a dynamic partition in the super partition for this device. It's also an A/B device, in fastboot mode you can find the correct slot using:
fastboot getvar current-slot
The device won't accept flashing in fastboot bootloader mode, but it works fine in userspace fastboot (fastbootd). I wouldn't use QFIL to flash this because editing the super partition directly is a pain and liable to brick...
After rooting I was able to use the build.prop edits by NPAudio on this forum and SmartPack kernel manager to tweak things. The default CPU governor was performance on the 1.00 update which was especially bad, but it might have been changed with 1.11 to something sane (schedutil).

The features are super good especially as a budget DAP, but the battery life isn't great, so first thing I did was go uninstall a bunch of packages and tune kernel to save battery. Class A amp also gets kind of warm but I don't know if there's much to be done about that. Neutron still plays over SD with no lag and upsampling with the big cores at 652MHz (2000MHz normally) and little cores at 612MHz (1800 MHz normally), though it seems like the UI can stutter a bit with upsampling. I like that Hiby makes it pretty easy to mess with the device too, no locked bootloader or anything.

plbuam Thank you for your contribution on this. I am going to be getting my R4 Eva next week. Do the OTA updates get rid of root or do they still play well? Could you please write a step by step guide here on how you rooted the R4? I am sorry if I am asking for a lot. Thank you once again.
