At least we have proof they are attempting at having a successor.
Hopefully they will have at least trickled down all their DMP tech into it.
Being Sony, they will be expected to rival the high bar that all the other Daps have accomplished, so they have a heavy burden to meet.

Someone on head-fi posted shots of some apparently Chinese leak on the new WM1Z successor. Getting DX300 vibes from its size. If it's real it must be a prototype since I can't imagine them making that puke-y gold color the new standard 1Z model instead of something with actual copper. Gotta have some excuse to charge more money, after all Much more power output at least to DX300 levels should be a given, but I bet battery life will be the same old song. Anyway it could be fake so I'm not gonna put too much speculation into it. Hopefully we get concrete news soon. FWIW, the Chinese basically says "Showing you guys something not on the market yet, Sony's new gold brick, has an Android system with that familiar signature sound." Since Sony is not a Chinese company, but a Japanese one, how would it be leaked in Chinese? Then again the Chinese probably do have a way of infiltrating, haha

Android is a hard pass for me, unless all the Google spying stuff can be disabled, and have it be just a simple local file player. Having said that, I am pretty happy with the modded 1A, so this thing would have to be pretty damn special for me to even consider a jump.
I am in the process of ditching my android phone as well, gonna go to a Light Phone soon, done with the crazy spying apps etc etc. Don't want my data going towards the new covid spying protocols either. Track and Trace my @$$

Track and Trace my @$$ That's a good idea. Now that covid ruined practically everything, I thinking to go back to the roms website that has all the phones, and installing a clean hacked rom onto my existing phone. I used to do this for many years but got lazy in last 3-4yra and just used stock OS... So you should look into just flashing a clean OS onto your existing phone and add new life to it, rather than spending money on another phone. I may also switch back to sony once I do a comparison with the lastest (Mr Walkman) OS, to my existing ibasso 220max. This is the only other phone that can avoid Android spyware, by switching to it's "Mango" OS. It has dual boot. Yet with the Sony, it even sounds better than the two LP P6 (R2R chip) versions I tried. There is a musicality that comes from Sony, compared to more sterile, or more reference units. Sony can absolutely place thier sound (as done on the DMP) on any chip, so I am guessing (because of Japanese pride) they will hit a "home run" regardless, when it comes to the sound. The only big question, is wether they will make it with alot of power, or only a half watt, like most dam Dap units. Power was the only factor that swayed me away from the Sony, although I used to use it as a dac for my desktop tube amp. I been saying for a while, that Daps today are a valid replacement for decktop dac& computer source. I sold my yggy & "Holo Spring" dacs long ago after I got the Sony WM1Z to replace it with a simple headphones jack to line level adapter. 🙂

I did some photo comparisons, and it seems that the leak pics of that Sony, looks smaller and thinner than both the fiio m17 & the ibasso dx300max, so I am not believing it will have similar output power, unless something new.😳

Track and Trace my @$$ Whilst I 100% understand this, the light phone looks like an expensive solution for how little it does. Surely a 10 year old Nokia would do the trick? If the Light Phone is appealing to you then you're obviously not bothered about Android/Apple integration and won't need the commonly used messenger apps that are available on smartphones. If all you need is to take a call and send a message, any phone would do. I currently use a 1st gen iPhone SE that I've owned for years and I'm seriously considering an old Nokia when this dies or stops being supported for the same reason. I'll miss certain smartphone perks like Apple Pay, Google Maps and constant email access, but they're also part of why I want to switch - productivity. I'm fully aware of how much time I waste doing nothing on my phone, yet I'm extremely restrained compared to everyone else my age. I know I've shared my thoughts on how connected the world has gotten and how I prefer an offline player, but flagship devices running on Android is a dealbreaker to me. Android is without a doubt the WORST OS that still exists. Android is inefficient and poorly supported to the point that it's outdated within 6 months of being released. I don't know anyone that's owned the same Android device for more than 2 years, yet I know dozens of people with iOS devices they've had for over 3-4years. Everyone rants and raves about Sony's OS on the ZX300/1A/1Z players for a reason. Because it's THAT good.

Same not remotely interested if Google is involved, as will be just yet another device that acquires personal data that you have to actively manage. I simply want DAP's to play music and if they do stream zero integration by the likes of Google who only serve themselves and whoever pays the most. Open Android can be utilised similar to A&K, equally Sony has already shown it's hand with the ZX500...

It is unfortunate, but I would be shocked if Sony released a new player without Android/Google services. Sure I think they care about sound quality, but in this day and age, the general consumer market will not be very receptive of a "new" walkman without the ability to stream, download apps, browse the internet, watch videos, etc. because in 2021 we are so tied to the smart phone experience. At the end of the day, Sony is still in the business of making money and they are fully on-board with Google as demonstrated by their release of the ZX500 series.

Problem being is that we are very much in the minority of a small minority people who are willing to pay such prices for a high end DAP. What might be interesting is the Chinese Mainland version as this shouldn't technically have any Google services installed.
What would be the best option for all would be the option on first boot to select Open Android or Google's Android, however I seriously doubt Sony will look to serve such a small audience and go with the flow as by far the vast majority don't think about privacy just want to click and see what they want...
Overall the biggest negative for the next generation of 1A/1Z is the user loosing the flexibility to change the region & firmware.

Q-6 This is why I think I am gonna have to pick up the DMP-Z1 at some point. It was such a great experience for me when I got the chance to listen to it, completely offline as well. Textured, holographic, couldn't believe my ears. Had to quit listening, it was too much to bear If/when they lock us down again.... I am probably getting it.

At the end of the day, Sony is still in the business of making money and they are fully on-board with Google as demonstrated by their release of the ZX500 series. I get the argument behind this, these companies need to make a product that's more likely to sell - I don't fault them on that. I find it ridiculous how a company like Sony even encourages streaming on a Hi-Res player in the first place though. Sony should just let every other bland Android based DAP compete between themselves whilst they're off doing what they do best and serving the crowd that honestly don't care. Sony could thin down their player options and have one entry level device that demonstrates what they're about. There's nothing remotely "hi-res" about streaming files that WILL be downsampled to meet the low capabilities of today's headphones. LDAC is the best we have and it's exclusive to Sony and it still can't touch 16bit's sample rate. Sony should know better.... If people want the smartphone experience then they should just stick to using their smartphone rather than trying to shape a market with irrelevant reviews about a product they clearly don't care for. Likewise, Sony shouldn't be b*stardising products or abandoning their philosophy on people that couldn't give a crap either. The chances of smartphone lovers (who are willing to blow over £1k on a phone) being interested in a dedicated DAP is next to nil, the ones that are likely won't be impressed about having to shell out another £1000+ on a product that can't do what their phone can, so it's a wasted effort. This is no different than streaming 4K content. Anyone who's even remotely interested in watching 4K content will buy an UHD BluRay player and own everything on disc. They won't "make do" with a highly compressed 4K file that barely meets the fidelity of a physical 1080p copy. People who stream simply don't care about quality or ownership - it's all about consuming the content with as little effort on their end as possible. That being said, if Sony's "new" player didn't have Android I still wouldn't buy it as I'm perfectly happy with the player I've got. They wouldn't get a purchase out of me anyway so maybe my point is moot
