Well after more testing I confirm the new Plus V2 with the FE ext sound signature is incredible. The battery hit is smaller and the sound improvement is totally worth it!

An update for Dawn/Midnight v2 for WM1A/Z is now available. To install this new update you'll have to use StockRevert again (sorry, I know it's annoying). The StockRevert package will now look for the Dawn settings file, and it will make sure that the player's region is the one set in the file. If a Dawn settings file doesn't exist, it will check for a Midnight settings file, and if this one also doesn't exist, there will be no changes to the region. You will also see some entries in the boot_log.txt file after the StockRevert package was used. The Home page icons color will now be the default one after using the StockRevert package. There is now a "Lower" gain option available, besides the "Higher" and "Normal" ones. Also, in order for the Gain setting to work, you'll have to delete any existing settings file, so new ones can be generated. This option might help with the (normal, not related to these mods) background hiss on sensitive IEMs, for example. Enjoy!

Next plans are: - working on a WM1A-only Midnight version (hopefully all goes well) - based on the mention above, have a mod solely for having the WM1Z sound signature on a WM1A
Basically, this would be a new approach to getting the WM1A even closer to the WM1Z sound signature. Theoretically, the WM1A-only Midnight version should sound more alike to how Midnight sounds on a WM1Z.
In any case, I think Midnight sounds wonderful on the WM1A as it is!
- ZX300-based and WM1A/Z-based mods for ZX300 - WM1A/Z-based mods for A30/A40/A50 - maybe spend some more time trying to make the interface fit better on the smaller screens

After initial testing done by lookout57 (welcome, by the way) and someone not on this forum, this is a success. I thought I've bridged the gap between 1A and 1Z as much as possible, but it seems that there was something more. It will take some days until this would be ready for release for 1A, so stay tuned. I also have an idea related to the DMP sound provided by Dawn, for sometimes in the future. It may work, it may not.

MrWalkman , I can testify that this new magic potion brings the 1A as close as possible to the 1Z. I'm lucky to have a 1A and a 1Z that allowed me to do direct comparisons. Both are Region J, Plus v2 and alternate DAC mode. Using the Solaris 2020, AZLA SednaEarfit XELASTEC tips and balanced DHC Clone Silver cable. I would listen to a portion of a song on the 1Z, then listen to the same portion on the 1A running this new version. Then I would listen to a full track on each back to back. The sound is now the closest I have ever heard. But I can still hear differences. The 1Z is more open and detailed versus the new version of Midnight for the 1A which has a touch more bass/warmth. The soundstage size is now very similar. I would say the 1Z is more resolving due to the hardware. But the 1A running this new version of Midnight is one amazing sounding DAP.

I never know how to really interpret people's thoughts on the 1Z still being more open or deep or what have you since the headphones/iems you're using also play a part in the sound, and that would differ radically between them wouldn't it? MrWalkman, are there extra features you're going to work on for Nayparm modded units or are most of your experiments planned to focus on the stock hardware? I'm genuinely impressed how fast you've gotten back into things after the brief hiatus Can't wait to see what lies ahead.

I'm not sure if something which doesn't sound ok on stock hardware is healthy for the device. Tuning mods were definitely sketchy when having this in mind.

Sorry for repeating myself but I cannot stress enough how much I love the new v2 plus mode. I thought it was imposible to push the sound quality further but MrWalkman did it again! I can say with absolute confidence this setup with the Gjallarhorns JM Edition sounds better than anything I've ever tried for these ears.

Your post made me look into what the equivalent is that Kennerton offers for open backs. Looks like a new iteration of the Vali called the "Vali Neotecnic" is it, but barely any reviews online. Mostly been settled on getting a Focal Clear when the time comes for the WM1A, but I'm somewhat curious about Kennerton after your raving here and in the thread you made Wish there were more experiences about them with a WM1A/Z. It'll be on my radar for the time being

Just did a continous play test on my Nayparm modded unit with the big battery. From 90% to shutdown with source direct, 70 on volume on balanced normal gain it did 50 hours on Dawn V2 with FE, plus 2 mode and alternative dac

Gjallarhorn is the only headphone I’m lusting after trying but that is virtually impossible

Midnight v2 (for 1A) Updates (September 4th):- further bridging the gap of sound quality between a WM1A and a WM1Z player; Now, a WM1A running Midnight v2 (for 1A) will sound the closest ever to a WM1Z running Midnight v2 (with both using the same options in the settings file and the same external tuning). - the default settings with this firmware are: Plus v2 mode, Different DAC initialization mode, MX3 region (change these in the settings file); - there should be no more glitching when using the BT Receiver mode. • Your device configuration prior to installing this firmware will be backed up internally and replaced. This means you'll notice different player options being set/audio played hours, which is normal. • The device configuration will be restored when using the StockRevert package to how it was before installing this firmware (including audio played hours). As always, you'll have to revert back to stock before installing this. This firmware will only install on a WM1A player. You can download this firmware here.
Of course, feel free to share your thoughts!
