The dawn classic is the most Holographic I have heard the 1A. At least with my IEMs. I absolutely love the DMP-Z1, and that was quite crazy....but this firmware with the modds on the 1A...man, it's the best portable setup I have ever heard. It's better than my modded RME-ADI2. Better than any of the AK offerings that I have gotten my hands on. I think I'll be picking up another 1A as a backup before Sony stops production, it'll stay in the box just in case something happens to the one I have.
This portable setup is directly competing with my $20K plus 2 channel Stereo system. That is saying quite a lot.

Covid Lockdowns till 2024, and a banking reset in 2025. we are in it for the long haul at this point. who knows what the world will look like at the end of it all, get your extra 1A while you can.... and a fresh battery. I've got to admit I'm starting to agree with this attitude lately. Whilst I've never been a fan of stocking up on devices or buying more than I need to, we're going to experience a paradigm shift within the next 5 years and god knows what with. I'd hate to be in the position where I can't even find a replacement Walkman, let alone dealing with ridiculously inflated prices on the few used ones left. Considering these are dedicated offline devices in a very online world makes it even more likely that they'll be the first to get canned when companies need to make cutbacks. Hell, Sony's ZX500 is supposed to be a direct replacement or "upgrade" to the ZX300 even though it runs on Android and sells itself as being a great device for streaming music. In reality, the UI is worse, still has 64GB of memory and worse battery life. I don't understand how streaming music is supposed to be more efficient than having it stored locally on the device. If you have to connect it to your phone then why wouldn't you just use your phone? It has USB-C though for those that care about getting angry about proprietary connectors.... I want a dedicated offline player, because frankly I'm sick and tired of using devices that are always connected to the internet so they can constantly update me on crap I don't care about. I like to separate myself from them, but I'd like to have my music when I do it.

Streaming degrades SQ no matter how many tricks you try to pull out of your butt. The future is looking pretty crazy man, I am about to order some fresh batteries, some extra Kaesei capacitors, and another 1A. will do it later this week. I can mod the 1A myself no problem, but will keep that one in storage in case anything happens to the one I have. Also need a battery pack for off grid camping trips.

An Android player could be nice, and with a smooth experience, only if Sony equipped it with a proper SoC, like some flagship Android smartphones are using.
I'm strictly talking about the user experience here, not about the sound quality. I think that an Android player can have very good sound quality, even with all the interference brought by Wi-Fi.
At the moment the only reason I despise A105/ZX500 is the user experience. I'm past laggy UI that is usually present in budget smartphones.

All the covid surveillance that they are bringing about, I don't want any devices that can connect to the internet. I just ordered a Light Phone, no internet, no android, no Apple crap. So definitely Do not want a DAP that is built on any Google platform. Having said all that, in my experience Android wifi implementation produces interference, and I never use any of these streaming services anyways, so there would be no point for me to invest in these DAPs. I am sure I'll pick up a DMP at some point, probably used. In Israel they are barring unvaccinated people from going out to the beach, checkpoints everywhere. This is coming to a place where you live this fall. So the people that are still holding out, get ready (now)!!. Fascism is back in full force.... Funny how much these last 2 years look like that movie V For Vendetta.

I can mod the 1A myself no problem, but will keep that one in storage in case anything happens to the one I have. Also need a battery pack for off grid camping trips. That's exactly the issue I have with "Hi-Res" streaming players though. The whole point is to prioritise SQ above everything else whilst offering some form of portability to the user. I've always found Sony's OS on the ZX300/1A/1Z series exactly what I'm after; a bare bones UI that's designed exclusively for music playback, nothing more - nothing less. As soon as Android comes into the mix with wireless, streaming apps and google's interference it goes against the purpose of the product. Sure streaming is convenient, but convenience always comes at the expense of everything else - including sound quality. The highest wirelessly supported bitrate available can't even fully realise 16bit and that's assuming every product is Sony or supports Sony's LDAC. Everything else has to make do with AptX which personally, 400kb/s was pathetic 15 years ago in my mind. Even at 15 I could easily tell the difference between an 320kb/s AAC file vs a lossless CD rip. I get that people pay for convenience, but streaming Hi-Res music is the same as streaming 4K content. A good 4K stream is barely on par with a 1080p physical copy played on a BluRay player. Sure, the world might be moving towards streaming based subscriptions services, but it's not better - just different.

I Paid $1100 dollars for a cable for my Favorite IEM, it was just the perfect cherry on top a fantastic piece of gear. Modding my player, experimenting with cables, battery cables, to squeeze out every last bit of performance and Audio Quality. To go to a DAP that has degradation of SQ built into the design, to me, is like drawing doodles on the Mona Lisa. I have invested about $20K into my 2 channel setup, all hand modded as well, to hook that up to something like Tidal....Jesus, just the thought of that makes me want to cry. Streaming is basically what CDs did to the quality of music going from High res master tapes, and Records. a Trend that MP3s perfected. Quality sacrificed for convenience every single time, and you can apply that to pretty much everything outside of music as well.

I'm sure if I'd spent that kind of money on a setup I'd flinch at the idea of using a wireless source too. I do use Bluetooth from time to time, usually because it's the only available way of connecting my device to something. I'd rather music than no music. If I have music on in the background with others present, it'll likely be over a wireless signal as our TV's soundbar/sub is the best "home" setup I have access to. If it's just me? Well I've got good headphones or IEMs depending on the situation. 99% of the time though, I use a wired connection. CD's get a lot of flack, but they were a solid format. Portable enough to carry but brought lossless with it, it's just a shame that the loudness war came about at the same time. I've got dozens of Vinyl rips that so damn quiet in comparison to the rest of my digital library that was purchased in 16 or 24bit. Obviously the whole analog vs digital argument can come into play, but I can't carry my catalog in analog like I can in a digital format. I even understand why MP3's caught on with the masses, most people don't care about quality - they just want the songs.

I Have maybe a handul of cd's, or CD quality music, Everything else is 24/48 or up. I can't tell you how many times people have tried arguing with me how DSDs are no better than 16/44, or how High Res is s scam. These people must have hearing damage from listening to very loud music, or have distorted gear. Probably a combination of both... they are the MP3 crowd, and also tend to be "Science/Graphs" people.

About 75% of my library is rips of my about 2.500 cd’s that I have bought over the last 35-40 years. About 5% are vi yl rips (either from the internet or my own lp’s). The remaining 20% are hires abd dsd downloads bought online. And while the hires generally sound best I’m perfectly happy with my cd rips that sound really good on all my gear. I would say my gear is decent and while I have a little hearing damage on one ear from an explosion in my youth I would say I’ve got fairly decent hearing
